Charles Jaffe is a senior columnist for MarketWatch. His syndicated column “Your Funds” is the most widely read feature on mutual fund investing in the United States. So what happened when his daughter received a phone call claiming she had been awarded a $9,000 grant from the Health and Human Services Department?
By Jaffe’s own admission, the news sounded legitimate. This was a real government agency, a real person calling, a phone number that showed on caller ID, and the man on the phone offered his daughter the chance to call him back.
But as you can probably guess, it was a scam. And while Mr. Jaffe was kind enough to walk his readers through the details, he also offered four questions that can help determine if you’re being scammed.
We encourage you to read through the column and note his questions. They may allow you to “arm” yourself in the future against these unscrupulous people.
