Man walking across crosswalk

There’s a reason mom always told us to look both ways before we crossed the street. In Texas, you might want to triple check before you cross. According to the “Pedestrian Danger Index,” Texas is the 8th most dangerous state for pedestrians.

Data was also compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2018, Texas had 619 pedestrian fatalities. Nationally, there was a 2.7% decrease in pedestrian fatalities in 2019. (We have not seen the state-by-state numbers.)

According to the nonpartisan Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, a number of factors are involved with accidents involving pedestrians including distracted drivers (surprise!), larger vehicles, and more people getting out and about.
