Riding Bikes

The Wylie Police Department is asking drivers to slow down and pay attention. Since the current school year began, four students have been hit by a car while riding their bikes on or near their respective school.

  • On August 20, a student was hit while riding their bike in a neighborhood near Wylie East High School
  • On August 28, a student was hit while riding to Harrison Intermediate School
  • On September 5, a 16-year old student was hit on the Wylie East High School campus
  • On September 9, a student was hit while riding on the McMillan Junior High campus

According to Wylie ISD Superintendent David Vinson, he’s never seen a string of accidents like this during his tenure.  “It seems that no one has the intention of hurting someone,” Vinson said. “The notion is we’re all in too big of a hurry.”

Sgt. Donald English of Wylie Police told WFAA that none of the students hit were seriously injured, but said one did need some stitches.

And that’s extremely fortunate. Those of us who ride bikes in the DFW know all too well the dangers on the road. With few bike lanes, incomplete sidewalks, and only a few trails, the battle between a bicycle and a 4,000 lb car is rarely a fair fight.
