A former kitchen employee of the Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department was recently arrested for felony theft. What was he accused of stealing? Over the course of nine years, he allegedly stole $1.2 million worth of fajitas.
Gilberto Escaramilla’s scheme came crashing down when he missed a day of work to attend a medical appointment. On that same day, a Labatt Food Service delivery truck arrived with 800 pounds of fajitas. The problem was the juvenile jail did not serve fajitas.
While there is some amusement when reading this story, the fact is, these were county-funded food services, so the taxpayer was the real victim.
Fraud and theft occurs daily in many businesses across the country. While the majority of fraud cases don’t involve stolen fajitas, they can involve millions of dollars.
