A Fort Worth woman recently received a call from a scammer saying she had failed to appear for jury duty and would need to pay a fine of $5,000. The con man offered to take $1,000 as a down payment, or he would report her and she would sit in jail until Monday.
According to authorities, this scam has been around since 2010. Tarrant County’s jury services office says they hear about the scam once or twice a week.
Fortunately, the 64-year old woman was on to the con man. She told the Star-Telegram that she admonished him to “quit trying to take people’s money, become an honest citizen and get a job.” Game, set and match to this savvy lady!
Please be aware and alert for these types of phone calls. If need be, you can call your county jury services office and ask if you have missed a jury summons. The county is never going to call to announce that you may be arrested.
