For many small business owners, advertising at local high school games is a great way to get your name into the community. And if the proceeds can benefit those schools, all the better. Unfortunately, there is a company that is taking advantage of these opportunities – and not delivering.
The Fort Worth-based company is called Touchdown Sports, and also uses the names Boost Sports and TD Sports. So far, school districts in Allen and Leander (Round Rock) as well as SMU and Learfield Sports have sent cease-and-desist letters. And their reach has exceeded the State of Texas, with school districts from Montana to New York issuing warnings about this company.
Fort Worth’s Star-Telegram has been writing about Touchdown Sports since the spring, and continues to uncover businesses defrauded by this company. Jonida Lagji, owner of an insurance agency in Old Bridge, New Jersey, spent $6,000 on cups, t-shirts and banners that were supposed to be distributed at two local high school football games.
When Ms. Lagji attended one of the high school games, there were no banners and no merchandise to be found. She knew she had been had. When she tried to find out what happened, the company went silent. This same story has been repeated over and over.
So far, the Better Business Bureau has received 28 complaints about this company, and has given them a score of F.
Small business owners often deal with limited resources and tight budgets, so please do your due diligence when it comes to marketing your company. And if in doubt, don’t. If you have a business, large or small, and feel you may have been defrauded, please feel free to give the Harris Firm a call to discuss the matter with us.
