Numerous state and local authorities teamed up to shut down a major odometer fraud operation.
Kenneth Rose was arrested in Grand Prairie after a three-year investigation found that he allegedly rolled back the odometers on hundreds of Texas vehicles. Rose is also accused of having contacts with a number of used-car dealerships in the area.
Odometer fraud is the resetting, disconnection or “rolling back” of a vehicle’s odometer with the intent to defraud. According to investigators in this case, people who have bought a car with a reset or rolled back odometer will be contacted by Texas DMV officials.
The DMV lists several things to look for when purchasing a used-car:
• Examine the interior and exterior of the vehicle carefully • Write down the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) • Obtain a vehicle inspection report. They’re free at www.mytxcar.org. • Check vehicle history reports using a third-party provider like CARFAX or AutoCheck •Do a title check
If you believe you have been the victim of odometer fraud, there are several courses of action:
File a dealer complaint with the Texas DMVFile a complaint with policeConsult an attorney if you think you may have to take civil action
