According to the Texas Department of Transportation, 501 motorcyclists died in 2017 in crashes on Texas roads. Incredibly, another 2,101 motorcyclists were seriously injured. While May is coming to a close, it is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and a good reminder to look twice for motorcycles when you’re out and about.
Intersections are particularly dangerous for motorcyclists and drivers. From 2010 through 2015, 25 percent of motorcycles crashes occurred when a vehicle was turning left in front of an oncoming motorcycle – likely because the driver didn’t see the motorcyclist coming.
Here are a few reminders from TxDOT when it comes to sharing the road:
Always look twice for motorcycles – especially at intersectionsAssume motorcycles are closer than they appearCheck blind spots and use your turn signal before changing lanesGive motorcycles a full lane to operateAvoid following a motorcycle too closely
Dallas is the ninth largest city in the United States, and Fort Worth just moved to 15th so we’re all going to be sharing the road – and with more people. As the slogan says, “Look Twice Save a Life.”
