Our office, as well as social media, has been buzzing with complaints of late-night phone calls from area codes 222 and 232. Your call log may only show the phone number while others show the call originating from Sierra Leone. Do not answer those calls or call that number back!

According to the Federal Communications Commission, this phone scam is often referred to as the “One Ring.” The goal is to trick the curious into answering or returning the call. If you do, you risk being connected to an overseas phone number, and you could be charged significant fees by your phone company.

If you are a victim of this scam, and received charges on your phone bill, the FCC recommends you try to resolve the matter with your carrier. If that doesn’t work, file a complaint with the FCC.

We have written a number of articles on phone scams. The safest course of action? Do not answer or return calls from numbers you don’t recognize.
